Dose
| Indication | Dose |
|---|---|
| Prevention of PPH (third stage) | 10 units IM (or slow IV) after delivery of the baby |
| Treatment of PPH | 5 units slow IV (may repeat once), then infusion 40 units in 500 mL 0.9% saline at 125 mL/hour |
| Induction or augmentation | Low-dose infusion per labour ward protocol, titrated to contractions |
Cautions
- Fast IV bolus causes low BP and tachycardia; give slowly, especially in heart disease.
- Large volumes cause water intoxication and low sodium.
- Hyperstimulation of the uterus in labour (fetal distress).
- Store in a fridge; potency falls in heat (an issue in Pakistani summers).
