Main routes for Pakistani graduates
Pakistan is not on the Medical Council of New Zealand’s competent-authority or comparable-health-system lists in the same way as the UK, Ireland, Australia or several other systems. For most Pakistani doctors the practical routes are:
- Passing the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX Clinical), or
- Holding PLAB 1 and 2 (recognised within the examination pathway if passed within the required timeframe)
After that comes registration in a provisional general scope and supervised practice before full general scope.
Typical sequence
- Primary source verification of the degree
- English language evidence to MCNZ standard
- NZREX Clinical (or accepted alternative such as recent PLAB)
- Application for registration and a supervised position
- Provisional general scope to general scope after satisfactory supervised practice
Doctors are on the Green List for immigration purposes once they hold (or have eligibility for) the relevant MCNZ registration, which can support residence pathways when combined with a compliant job offer.
Realistic expectations
Competition for supervised posts exists, especially in popular locations. Rural and regional positions are often more accessible. The overall process is multi-step and takes time; treat any claim of a very short route with caution and check current MCNZ guidance directly.
