FCPS first or abroad first?

A practical way to decide based on where you actually want to live and work in seven to ten years — not on prestige or peer pressure.

There is no single correct answer

The decision depends on where you want to live long-term, how much risk and cost you can carry, family plans, and how competitive your preferred specialty is inside Pakistan.

Arguments for FCPS first

  • You build a recognised specialist qualification inside the system you already know
  • You can still go abroad later with a stronger CV in some pathways
  • Lower immediate financial outlay than multiple international exams and moves
  • If your goal is to practise long-term in Pakistan, this is the direct route

Arguments for abroad first

  • Earlier exposure to different systems and often higher early earnings (especially Gulf)
  • Some pathways (UK, Australia, Canada, NZ) lead to permanent migration options
  • Avoids the long wait for training seats in competitive specialties
  • You can still return to Pakistan later if plans change

A practical way to decide

Write down where you want to be in seven to ten years — city, lifestyle, family, income band. Then map which pathway most reliably leads there. Many people do a hybrid: house job, then a short Gulf or MO period, then either FCPS or a full abroad pathway. Parallel preparation (e.g. English tests while working) keeps options open without full commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start FCPS and then switch to an abroad pathway?

Yes. Many people do. The main cost is time.

Does FCPS help in the Gulf or UK?

FCPS is recognised in some Gulf specialist classifications. For the UK it is not a substitute for PLAB/GMC registration for most IMGs.
