Private vs public house job in Pakistan
The daily experience, learning and workload differ more than the official descriptions suggest. Here is a practical comparison.

The real differences
Public (government) teaching hospitals and private hospitals offer different daily experiences. Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on what you want from the year — volume of patients, teaching, exam preparation time, or a quieter environment.
Public / teaching hospitals
- Higher patient volume and more complex cases
- More structured teaching in many units, but also more competition for procedures
- Heavier on-call and night duties in most places
- Broader exposure that helps for FCPS and for clinical confidence
- Often more formal hierarchy and more ward politics
Private hospitals
- Usually lower volume and more predictable hours in many units
- Less formal teaching in some places; learning depends more on the individual consultants
- Often better facilities and sometimes better support staff
- Can leave more energy for exam study if the roster is lighter
- Exposure may be narrower — fewer very sick or complex public-sector patients
How to decide
If your main goal is maximum clinical exposure and a strong foundation for FCPS training, a busy public unit is often better. If you need protected study time or a less chaotic year, a well-run private post can be a rational choice. Talk to house officers who recently finished the same unit — official descriptions and real experience often differ.

Frequently asked questions
Do private house jobs count the same for registration?
Yes for the one-year requirement, provided the hospital and rotations meet the regulatory standards.
Is one type better for FCPS Part 1 preparation?
A lighter roster can help study hours. A heavier public unit can help clinical understanding. Both paths are used successfully.
