NRE Step 1 vs Step 2 — key differences

Two different exams with different preparation styles. Here is a clear comparison and the order that works for most candidates.

On this page

The core difference

NRE Step 1 is the written knowledge exam. NRE Step 2 is the clinical skills / practical component. They test different things and need different preparation styles.

Step 1 focus

Broad knowledge across medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics and applied basic sciences. High-yield subjects and past-paper style questions matter most. See the high-yield subjects guide and the complete guide.

Step 2 focus

Clinical skills, communication, examination technique and practical decision-making. Preparation is more about practised stations and structured approaches than reading large volumes of text. Many candidates underestimate how different the preparation feels from Step 1.

Order and timing

Most people sit Step 1 first. Step 2 is usually attempted after the knowledge base is solid and some clinical confidence has returned. Trying to prepare both intensively at the same time is difficult, especially alongside clinical work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sit Step 2 before Step 1?

No. You must pass Step 1 before you can sit Step 2, the Clinical Skills Examination (an OSCE of about 20 stations).

Is Step 2 harder?

It is different. Candidates who are strong at written exams sometimes find the practical format more stressful, and vice versa.
